Who are Gog and Magog?

Who are Gog and Magog?

18:89 Then he followed (a) course 18:90 Until, when he reached the rising place of the sun, and he found it rising on a community for whom We had not made against it any shelter. … 18:92 Then he followed a course 18:93 Until, when he reached between the two mountains, he found besides them a community, who would almost not understand (his) speech. 18:94 They said, "O Dhul-qarnain, indeed, Gog and Magog are corrupters in the land. So may we make for you an expenditure that you make a barrier between us and them?"

(One interpretation is that Gog is an individual and Magog is his land; the prefix “ma” means “place” in Arabic. In regard to the Bible, in Ezekiel 38:2, it says “set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshek and Tubal”, so according to Ezekiel, “Magog” is a land as well (But it might be both, an individual, and the land of Gog and Magog as well). An interpretation is that “Magog” could also refer to its people because the Qur’an, and also the Book of Revelation, use the word “and” (Gog and Magog), instead of “Gog from Magog”; and Verse 21:96 says “they” (plural) referring to “Gog and Magog”, instead of the dual form, so it might refer to Gog and the people of Magog)(On the other hand, according to Genesis 10:2 and 1 Chronicles 1:5, Magog is an individual, he is the son of Japheth; while “Gog” is not mentioned in there; one interpretation is that “Magog” in Genesis might not be related to “Magog” in Ezekiel, despite they have the same name)(The people of Magog might be descendants of the individual Magog, son of Japheth. So, “Magog” might indicate a lineage: “Magog” is mentioned in Genesis 10:2 as an individual, then Genesis 10:32 says, “these are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood”)(If so, then, despite “ma” is a prefix indicating “place” in Arabic, but both “Gog” and “Magog” might refer to individuals and their descendants)(Another interpretation is that all interpretations are valid, so Magog is an individual, and his descendants, and his descendants’ place or location)(Allah knows best)

21:96 Until when has been opened (for) Gog and Magog, and they descend from every elevation. … 21:98 Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will come to it.

(According to this Verse “from every elevation” could imply that they ended up being anywhere on earth, (but according to the context, it refers to a future event); this might be confirmed by Revelation 20:8, which says “and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth – Gog and Magog – and to gather them for battle”, so one interpretation is that “four corners” refer to the four farther parts of the earth – north, south, east, west, so that they would be anywhere on earth)(Another point is that Dhul-qarnain, mentioned in the Qur’an, is Cyrus king of Persia (see the link below “Who is Dhul-Qarnain?”); it is said that Cyrus’ empire stretched from Asia Minor (Turkey) in the west to the Indus River (Pakistan, India, China) in the east. The Qur’an does not specifically say that Magog is one of these countries, but consider that Verse 18:93 says, “he found besides them a community, who would almost not understand (his) speech”. Only Chinese language could not be fully understood, because other languages (Urdu, Hindi, even Russian, etc.), are Indo-European languages, like Persian language. So Magog is not any place with a language similar to old Persian (the language of Cyrus), or a place with a language which they could have perfectly o easily understood the speech)(Cyrus shared borders with China. So, according to maps of Cyrus’ empire, Cyrus annexed Pakistan (parts of), Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, which share borders with China and Kazakhstan. Even today, the Persian language share borders with China (through Tajikistan and Afghanistan), and is even spoken inside China, by Tajiks (aka Pamiri people, who are an Eastern Iranian ethnic group), and there is also a heavily Persian-influenced Aynu language spoken by the Aynu people in southwestern Xinjiang who are officially considered Uyghurs)(Note: There are non-Indo-European languages in South Indian places as well)(Allah knows best)

18:83 And they ask you about Dhul-qarnain. Say, "I will recite to you a remembrance about him."

(Another point is that Ezekiel 38:5 says that “Persia, Cush (Ethiopia?) and Put (Libya?) will be with them (Gog and Magog), all with shields and helmets”. The Bible is not a reliable source, see the link below - “Is the Bible corrupted?”. If it was to refer to the same event (Cyrus’), then Ezekiel would be in direct contradiction with the Qur’an, because Persia (Cyrus) fought against Gog and Magog; unless it refers to a different event. On the other hand, if it is a future event, there are many Muslims in those countries. Gog and Magog are Muslims’ enemies)(It does not matter where is or who are Magog in order to practice Islam; there are many assumptions in this matter. Verse 18:94 says, “indeed, Gog and Magog are corrupters in the land”; so Muslims are against any corrupter in the land, that is, the non-Muslims who are corrupters, and they could be anywhere on earth, because there have been many events about corruption in the land)(Allah knows best)

30:41 Corruption has appeared on the land and the sea for what the hands of people have earned, so that He may let them taste a part of that which they have done so that they may return.

(“Gog and Magog” and “Cyrus” are linked in the Book of Chronicles: “Chronicles starts with a genealogy from the first human being, Adam, and passes into a biblical narrative of the history of ancient Judah and Israel until the proclamation of King Cyrus the great (c. 540 BC)”. So, “Gog” is mentioned in “1 Chronicles 5:4” (as one of the descendants of Joel), and “Magog” is mentioned in “1 Chronicles 1:5” (as one of the sons of Japheth), and “Cyrus king of Persia” is mentioned in “2 Chronicles 36:22-23”)(Gog is of the land of Magog (Ezekiel 38:2). So, the two groups, Gog and Magog, might have joined together)(Allah knows best)

2:12 Indeed, they are the ones who spread corruption, but they do not realize (it).

38:28 Or should We treat those who believe and do righteous deeds like those who spread corruption on the earth? Or should We treat the pious like the wicked?

2:30 And when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I am going to place a vicegerent on the earth, they said, "Will You place therein (one) who will spread corruption and shed blood, while we glorify with Your praises and sanctify You?” He said, "Indeed, [I] know that which you do not know." 2:31 And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He displayed them to the angels, then He said, "Inform Me the names of these, if you are truthful."

(Any human being might spread corruption)(Allah knows best)

17:4 And We decreed for the Children of Israel in the Book, "You will surely cause corruption on the earth twice, and you will surely reach great haughtiness."

(According to this Verse, the Children of Israel cause corruption on the earth, so not only Gog and Magog are corrupters)(Allah knows best)
