Does Islam permit Muslims to lie? Is deception, lying and the so-called “Taqiyya” allowed?

Does Islam permit Muslims to lie? Is deception, lying and the so-called “Taqiyya” allowed?

26:108 So fear (fa-ittaqu) Allah and obey me.

(“Taqiyya” is defined as the “precautionary dissimulation or denial of religious belief and practice in the face of persecution”. Some non-Muslims say that it is also “gaining the upper-hand over an enemy” and “gaining the trust of non-believers in order to draw out their vulnerability and defeat them”. The root of the word “taqiyya” does not have such meaning in the Qur’an / Islam, so “taqiyya” is an invented or man-made concept. The root of “ittaqu” (fear) is “Waw-Qaf-Ya” and it means “to protect, save, preserve, guard against evil and calamity, be secure, take as a shield; muttaqii – one who guard against evil and against that which harms and injures and is regardful of his duty towards human beings and God, etc.”. So, none of these definitions speak about deception or lying, on the contrary, it is about being regardful of your duty towards human beings and God, and protecting against evil, which is also good, etc.)(The word is interpreted / translated many times as “fear”; in that sense, the Qur’an tells about fearing Allah, not about fearing people (2:150, 9:13))(Allah knows best)

2:150 And from wherever you start forth [so] turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid Al-Haraam. And wherever you are, [so] turn your faces (in) its direction, so that people will not have any argument against you except those who wronged among them; so do not fear them, but fear Me. And that I may complete My favor upon you, [and] so that you may be guided.

9:13 Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths and determined to drive out the Messenger and they began (to attack) you the first time? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you are believers.

16:106 Whoever disbelieves in Allah after his belief, except (one) who is forced while his heart is content with faith. But those who open (their) breast to disbelief, then upon them is wrath of Allah, and for them is a punishment great.

(Some non-Muslims quote Verse 16:106 to prove that “taqiyya” is allowed, but the word taqiyya is not there. And the Verse does not speak about lying or deceiving. The matter in the Verse could be, for example, those non-Muslims who oppress and force people, while in Islam there is no compulsion in religion (2:256). It is not about Muslims lying or deceiving, but the point is that non-Muslims should not oppress people. Oppression is forbidden in Islam. So, you cannot force Muslims to do something against their will)(Allah knows best)

3:28 (Let) not the believers take the disbelievers as allies instead of the believers. And whoever does that, then he (has) not from Allah in anything except that you fear (tattaqu) from them, (as) a precaution (tuqatan). And Allah warns you (of) Himself, and to Allah is the final return.

(Some non-Muslims quote Verse 3:28 to prove that lying and deceiving is allowed in Islam, but Verse 3:28 does not speak about lying or deceiving, but about taking allies. And it is in a context of war, believers have to “defend themselves” from aggressors. You cannot throw yourself into destruction (2:195))(See the article below: “Can you take non-Muslims as friends?”, which explains and proves that the word “allies” is used in the context of war (Note: In Islam, fighting is in self-defense and against oppression, while non-Muslims fight for evil reasons))(Allah knows best)

9:1 Freedom from obligations from Allah and His Messenger to those (with) whom you made a treaty from the polytheists. ... 9:3 And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from obligations to the polytheists, and (so is) His Messenger. So if you repent, then, it is best for you. But if you turn away, then know that you (can)not escape Allah. And give glad tidings to those who disbelieve of a painful punishment.

(The context of Chapter 9 is self-defense (9:8-10, 9:12-13, 9:40, 9:61, 9:64-66, 9:107). Verses 9:1-3 are not about lying and deceiving, but the context is that the disbelievers didn’t regard or respect the covenant of protection (9:8, 9:10), and broke their oaths and determined to drive out the Messenger and they began to attack first (9:13), because they gained dominance (9:8). So, the disbelievers are the ones who practice/d the so-called “taqiyya”)(According to Verse 9:12, the purpose of fighting is that “they may cease” (attacking))(Allah knows best)

66:2 Indeed, Allah has ordained for you the dissolution of your oaths. And Allah is your Protector, and He is the All-Knower, the All-Wise.

(Verse 66:2 is misquoted by some non-Muslims. The context is about dissolution of marriage)(Women can divorce in Islam, but they cannot divorce in Christianity (Matthew 5:32). So, she could be oppressed or abused by her husband)(See the link below: “Explanation of Verses 66:1-6”)(Allah knows best)

40:28 And a believing man from (the) family (of) Pharaoh who conceal(ed) his faith said, "Will you kill a man because he says, "My Lord (is) Allah," and indeed he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord? And if he is a liar, then upon him (is) his lie; and if he is truthful, (there) will strike you some (of) (that) which he threatens you. Indeed, Allah (does) not guide (one) who (is) a transgressor, a liar.

(In Verse 40:28, a believer concealed his faith. The Verse doesn’t tell about he “laying and deceiving” but tell about “concealing”, which is a different matter. The Verse is actually against lying; it explicitly says, “Indeed, Allah does not guide (one) who is a transgressor, a liar” (40:28))(Pharaoh was the wrongdoer and murder. The believing man concealed his faith because of Pharaoh’s bad behavior. Pharaoh was the only person doing wrong, not the believing man. So, non-Muslims are missing or ignoring the point of the Verses of the Qur’an)(Allah knows best)

2:225 Allah will not take you to task for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He takes you to task for what your hearts earned. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.

(Verse 2:225 is not about laying and deceiving, but about what is “unintentional in your oaths” (2:225); “Allah will not call you to account for the thoughtless utterances in your oaths” (5:89); “there is no blame upon you if you made a mistake therein, but what your hearts intended” (33:5). Actually, Muslims are commanded to guard the oaths (5:89), but there is an expiation for the thoughtless utterances in your oaths (5:89). The Verses of the Qur’an are not mutually exclusive but complement each other)(Allah knows best)

5:89 Allah will not call you to account for the thoughtless utterances in your oaths but He will call you to account for what you contracted of the oath. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of what you feed your families or clothing them or freeing a slave. But whoever does not find (that), then fasting for three days. That is the expiation of your oaths when you have sworn. And guard your oaths. Thus Allah makes clear to you His Verses so that you may be grateful.

33:5 Call them by their fathers; it is more just near Allah. But if you do not know their fathers - then they are your brothers in religion and your friends. But there is no blame upon you if you made a mistake therein, but what your hearts intended. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

3:54 And they schemed (wamakaru), and Allah planned (wamakara). And Allah is the best of planners (l-makirina).

(Some non-Muslims object that “planner” also means “deceiver”, but the context is that the wrongdoers are scheming, so it might be about what the wrongdoers deserve or earn, because of their wrongdoing. Verse 2:194 says, “whoever transgressed against you, then you transgress against him in the same manner as he transgressed against you”)(“Makara” is derived from the root “Miim-Kaf-Ra” and it means “to practice deceit or guile or circumvention, practice evasion or elusion, to plot, to exercise art or craft or cunning, act with policy, practice stratagem”)(Allah knows best)

8:30 And when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or drive you out. And they were planning and Allah was planning. And Allah is the Best of Planners.

10:21 And when We let mankind taste mercy after adversity has touched them, behold, they have a plot against Our Verses. Say, "Allah is more swift in planning." Indeed, Our Messengers write down that which you plot.

27:14 And they rejected them, though they themselves were convinced with them, (out of) injustice and haughtiness. So see how was the end of the corrupters.

(Some non-Muslims are the ones who deceive and lie. They invent falsehood about Islam. See the articles below: “Response to Islam haters and their spreading of falsehood” and “Strategies against Islam”)(Allah knows best)

4:171 O People of the Book, do not commit excess in your religion and do not say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Glory be to Him, that He (should) have a son for Him. To Him whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

2:42 And do not mix the Truth with falsehood and conceal the Truth while you know.

2:159 Indeed, those who conceal the clear proofs We revealed, and the Guidance, after We made it clear for the people in the Book – they are cursed by Allah and cursed by those who curse. 2:160 Except those who repent and reform (themselves) and openly declare. Then from those, I will accept repentance, and I (am) the Acceptor of Repentance, the Most Merciful.

(Verses 2:159 and 40:28 are not contradictory. The believing man concealed his faith, so that Pharaoh did not know about his faith, but Pharaoh saw clear proofs (7:104-109), which were not concealed by the believing man. The believing man even said to Pharaoh, “indeed he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord” (40:28))(Allah knows best)

5:8 O you who believe, be steadfast for Allah as witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of people prevent you from being just. Be just; it is nearer to piety. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

7:37 Then who is more unjust than (one) who invented a lie against Allah or denies His Verses? Those - will reach them their portion from the Book, until when Our messengers come to them to take them in death, they say, "Where are those whom you used to invoke besides Allah?" They say, "They strayed from us,” and they (will) testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.

23:8 And those who (are) observers of their trusts and their promise(s)

22:30 That, and whoever honors the sacred rites of Allah, then it is best for him near his Lord. And are made lawful to you the cattle except what is recited to you. So avoid the abomination of idols and avoid the false word.

16:91 And fulfill the covenant of Allah when you have taken it, and do not break oaths after their confirmation while verily you have made Allah a surety over you. Indeed, Allah knows what you do. 16:92 And (do) not be like her who untwists her spun yarn after strength (into) untwisted strands; you take your oaths (as) a deception between you, because a community [it] is more numerous than (another) community. Allah only tests you by it. And He will make clear to you (on) the Day (of) the Resurrection that over which you used (to) differ. ... 16:94 And (do) not take your oaths (as) a deception between you, lest, a foot should slip after it is firmly planted, and you would the evil for what you hindered from (the) way (of) Allah and for you (is) a great punishment.

3:73 And do not believe except those who follow your religion." Say, "Indeed the guidance is the Guidance of Allah – lest someone be given the like of that which was given to you or that they may argue with you near your Lord." Say, "Indeed, the Bounty is in the Hand of Allah. He gives it to whom He wills, and Allah is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing." ... 3:75 And among the People of the Book is he who, if you entrust him with a great amount of wealth, he will return it to you. And among them is he who, if you entrust him with a single coin, he will not return it to you unless you constantly keep standing over him. That is because they said, "There is no any way on us concerning the unlettered people." And they say the lie about Allah while they know. 3:76 Nay, whoever fulfills his covenant and fears, then indeed, Allah loves those who fear. 3:77 Indeed, those who exchange (the) Covenant (of) Allah and their oaths (for) a little price, those – no share for them in the Hereafter, and Allah will not speak to them, [and] nor look at them (on the) Day (of) the Resurrection, [and] nor purify them, and for them (is) a punishment painful.

(Non-Muslims are the ones who do not keep their word. Verses 68:35-36 say “Then will We treat the Muslims like the criminals? What is with you? How do you judge?”. So, Muslims belong to a group in which there are not wrongdoers, because “Muslim” means “one who submits (to God)”, so, by definition, if a person is a criminal, he would no longer be a Muslim / submitted (to God); on the other hand, an atheist, Jew or Christian who is a deceiver/liar - he still is atheist (he still thinks that there is no God); or he still is a Jew (a Jewish mother makes him a Jew, according to themselves), or he still is a Christian (he believes on the cross, regardless of his deeds, according to themselves), so they belong to groups in which there are deceivers and liars)(Allah knows best)

3:161 And not is for a Prophet that he defrauds. And whoever defrauds will bring what he had defrauded (on the) Day (of) Resurrection. Then every soul is repaid in full what it earned and they (will) not be wronged.

3:196 (Let) not deceive you (the) movement (of) those who disbelieved in the land.

(The disbelievers (e.g. Jews, Christians, atheists, etc.) are the ones who deceive)(See the link below “Strategies against Islam”)(Allah knows best)

31:33 O mankind, fear your Lord and fear a Day (when) no father can avail anything for his son nor a son can avail anything for his father. Indeed, the Promise of Allah is True, so let not deceive you the life of the world nor let the deceiver deceive you about Allah.

(The life of this world (31:33), Satan (2:168) and his followers (17:64) also deceive people)(Allah knows best)

2:168 O mankind, eat from what is on the earth - lawful (and) good. And do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy. 2:169 He only commands you to do evil and the shameful and that you say about Allah what you do not know.

24:21 O you who believe, do not follow the footsteps of Satan, and whoever follows the footsteps of Satan, then indeed, he commands immorality and evil. And if not (for the) Grace of Allah upon you and His Mercy, none of you (would) have ever been pure, but Allah purifies whom He wills. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.

7:105 Obligated not to say about Allah except the truth. Verily, I (have) come to you with a clear Sign from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel."

59:13 Certainly, you(r) (arouse), in their breasts, (a) fear [is] more intense than Allah's. That (is) because they (are) a people (who do) not understand.
