Only four / eight types of cattle?

Only four / eight types of cattle?

39:6 He created you from a single soul. Then He made from it its mate. And He sent down for you of (mina) the cattle eight kinds. He creates you in the wombs of your mothers, creation after creation, in three darkness[es]. That is Allah your Lord; for Him is the dominion. There is no god except Him. Then how are you turning away?

(The Verse does not say that there are only four / eight types of cattle, but the sentence “for you of/from the cattle” implies that “among/from” all the cattle that exist, eight kinds are “for you”)(Allah knows best)

6:142 And of (wamina) the cattle (are some for) burden and (some for) meat. Eat of what Allah provided you, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you an open enemy. 6:143 Eight pairs - of the sheep two and of the goats two. Say, "(Are) the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Inform me with knowledge, if you are truthful." 6:144 And of the camels two and of the cows two. Say, "(Is it) the two males He has forbidden or the two females or that which the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when Allah enjoined you with this? Then who is more unjust than (one) who invents a lie against Allah to mislead the people without knowledge? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people."

(According to the context, people wrongly forbade some of the eight kinds of cattle which were allowed (6:144))(The Verses do not say that there are only four / eight types of cattle, but that’s the cattle that is “for you” (39:6, 6:142). Verse 6:142 makes distinction between cattle: some cattle is for burden, and some for meat, or for both)(It is interpreted that the mention of eight kinds of cattle might refer to the only quadruped animals or livestock or farm animals that are for you. The root of “l-an’ami” (the cattle) is N-Ain-M, and it means “soft in the concrete sense. In abstract, it means anything that can be understood as soft as in soft to touch and soft in treatment and soft life as in a life that does not have much hardship”)(Another point is that Verse 7:160 tells about eating quails, so, other than cattle is also allowed for eating. The Verses of the Qur’an are not mutually exclusive but complement each other)(Allah knows best)

5:1 O you who believe! Fulfil the contracts. Lawful for you are made the quadruped (of) the grazing livestock except what is recited on you - hunt(ing) not being permitted while you (are in) Ihram. Indeed, Allah decrees what He wills.

6:145 Say, "I do not find in what has been revealed to me (anything) forbidden to an eater who eats it except that it be dead or blood poured forth or the flesh of swine - for indeed, it is filth - or (it be) disobedience, dedicated to other than Allah. But whoever is compelled neither desiring nor transgressing, then indeed, your Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

(This Verse explicitly says that “what has been revealed” is not forbidden. So, the cattle mentioned in the Qur’an is allowed (e.g. eight types of cattle), except that which is mentioned as forbidden (e.g. previously dead, the flesh of swine,...). The mention of “swine” in the Qur’an confirms that more than eight kinds of livestock exist, but only those eight are for you)(The Verse might also suggest that also animals, other than cattle, are allowed for eating (e.g. that which you hunt (5:2), which is not cattle))(Allah knows best)

22:30 That, and whoever honors the sacred rites of Allah, then it is best for him near his Lord. And are made lawful to you the cattle except what is recited to you. So avoid the abomination of idols and avoid the false word.

(This Verse might suggest that all cattle is allowed, but it could also be interpreted that only the cattle recited to you is allowed, because Verse 22:30 mentions the cattle “made lawful to you” (22:30); in that sense, only the eight kinds of cattle are mentioned/recited (39:6). In addition, you cannot eat eight kinds of cattle if it were dedicated to idols, or that cattle was previously dead. So, the Verses complement each other. According to the context, “except what is recited to you” might refer to cattle dedicated to idols, because the next sentence says “so avoid the abomination of idols”. The sentence “except what is recited to you” might imply that forbidden is that which is explicitly mentioned to be forbidden)(In conclusion, Verse 22:30 might imply that, among cattle, only the eight kinds of cattle are allowed, except these eight kinds of cattle, which were dedicated to idols, etc.)(Allah knows best)

2:172 O you who believe[d]! Eat from (the) good (tayyibati) (of) what We have provided you and be grateful to Allah if you worship Him alone. 2:173 He has only forbidden to you dead animals (l-maytata), and blood, and flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. So whoever is forced, without (being) disobedient, nor transgressor, then there is no sin on him. Indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

(The sentence suggests that all good meat is allowed)(The word “tayyibati” implies that it must be lawful, not just about good taste. The root of “tayyibati” (good) is “Tay-Ya-Ba”, and it means “to be good, pleasant, agreeable, lawful”)(Allah knows best)

5:87 O you who believe, do not make unlawful good things (tayyibati), which (ma) Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not love the transgressors. 5:88 And eat what Allah has provided for you – lawful, good. And fear Allah, the One you are believers in Him.

(The word “tayyibati” implies something lawful: what has been made lawful for you; in that sense, eight kinds of cattle have been made for you. And you can also eat animals other than cattle)(Allah knows best)

16:8 And horses and mules and donkeys for you to ride them and (as) adornment. And He creates that which you do not know.

(Other cattle or livestock is mentioned in the Qur’an, which confirms that more than eight kinds of livestock exist, but horses, mules and donkeys are for riding and as an adornment)(In addition, Verse 16:8 says, “And He creates that which you do not know”, which might imply or suggest that, besides the kinds of cattle they know, they may not know other kinds, from other places)(Allah knows best)

40:79 Allah (is) the One Who made for you the cattle, that you may ride some of them and some of them you eat.

(Horses, mules, camels and donkeys are cattle. Verse 40:79 might confirm that not all cattle is for eating)(Allah knows best)

43:12 And the One Who created the pairs, all of them, and made for you of the ships and the cattle on which you ride, 43:13 That you may sit firmly on their backs, then remember the favor of your Lord when you sit firmly upon them and say, "Glory be to the One Who (has) subjected this to us, and we were not capable of it.

(The same Arabic word for “cattle” is used in Verses 43:12, 39:6 and 6:142. Then, “cattle” would include the ones for riding: horses, mules and donkeys. So, the Qur’an does not say that only four/eight types of cattle exist)(Allah knows best)

5:60 Say, "Shall I inform you of (something) worse than that as recompense from Allah? Those whom Allah has cursed and He became angry with him, and made of them apes and swines, and (those who) worshiped the false deities. Those are worse in position and farthest astray from the even way."

(Verses 5:60 and 7:179 mention “swines” and “cattle” respectively, in a context of both being astray. So, it implicitly suggest that swine is cattle, but it is forbidden)(Allah knows best)

7:179 And certainly We have created many jinn and men for Hell. They have hearts with which they do not understand, and they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like cattle, nay, they are more astray. Those - they are the heedless.

7:160 And We divided them (into) twelve tribes as communities. And We inspired to Moses when his people asked him for water, "Strike the stone with your staff." Then gushed forth from it twelve springs. Certainly, every people knew its drinking place. And We shaded them with clouds, and We sent down upon them manna and quails. "Eat of the good things which We have provided you." And they did not wrong Us but they were wronging themselves.

(This Verse tells about eating quails, and good things in general, so specifying four/eight types of cattle does not exclude the existence of other animals. The Qur’an does not say “only” four/eight exist; and the Verses of the Qur’an are not mutually exclusive but complement each other)(Allah knows best)

23:51 O Messengers, eat of the good things and do righteous (deeds). Indeed, I Am All-Knower of what you do.

5:3 Are made unlawful for you the dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which is dedicated to other than Allah, and that which is strangled, and that which is fatally hit, and that which has a fatal fall, and that which is gored by horns, and that which ate the wild animal except what you slaughtered, and that which is sacrificed on stone altars, and that you seek division by divining arrows - that is grave disobedience. This day those who disbelieve have despaired of your religion; so do not fear them, but fear Me. This day I have perfected your religion for you and I have completed My Favor upon you, and I have approved for you Islam as a religion. But whoever is forced by hunger with no inclination to sin, then indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 5:4 They ask you what is made lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are the good things and what you have taught of hunting animals, ones who train animals to hunt, you teach them of what Allah has taught you. So eat of what they catch for you, and mention the name of Allah on it, and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is swift in taking account. 5:5 This day good things are made lawful for you; and the food of those who were given the Book is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. And chaste women from the believers and chaste women from those who were given the Book before you, when you have given them their bridal due, being chaste, not being lewd, nor ones (who are) taking secret lovers. And whoever denies the faith - then surely his deeds are wasted and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.

(These Verses might speak about animals in general, so eight kinds of cattle are for you, in addition, that which you hunt (other than cattle) is also allowed)(Verse 5:3 says that “this day I have perfected your religion” in the context of food; and Verses 5:4-5 confirm that good things, in the context of food/meat, are made lawful, which implies that poisonous food is excluded)(Allah knows best)

22:36 And the camels and cattle, We have made them for you among the Symbols of Allah, for you therein is good. So mention the name of Allah over them (when) lined up; and when they are down on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy who do not ask and the needy who ask. Thus We have subjected them to you so that you may be grateful.

(The sentence “the camels and cattle” does not necessarily implies that the camels are not cattle, but, in Arabic language, such distinction might imply emphasizing camels over other cattle. For example, Verse 2:98 seems to make distinction between Angels, Messengers and Gabriel, while Verse 2:97 confirms that the spirit is Gabriel, and Verses 19:17-19 and 4:171 confirm that the Spirit is a Messenger. In regard to this distinction, M. Nader, in his article “The Holy Spirit in the Quran”, says that “In the Arabic language it is not unusual to specify part of a whole group to emphasize the significance of that part”. Another example, Verse 55:68 says, “In both of them (are) fruits and date-palms and pomegranates”. It is interpreted that date-palms and pomegranates are mentioned, to emphasize these two kinds of fruits)(Allah knows best)

16:115 He has only forbidden to you dead animal, and the blood, and the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah. But if one is forced - without being disobedient, nor a transgressor - then indeed, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. 16:116 And do not say about what your tongues assert, a lie, "This is lawful and this is forbidden," so that you invent a lie about Allah. Indeed, those who invent a lie about Allah, they will not succeed.
