How do you know if you are being tested or punished?

How do you know if you are being tested or punished?

2:214 Or do you think that you will enter Paradise while (has) not come to you as (came to) those who passed away before you? They were touched with adversity and hardship, and they were shaken until the Messenger and those who believed with him said, "When (will) Allah’s help (come)? Unquestionably, (Indeed) Allah’s help is near.

43:48 And We did not show them of a Sign but it was greater than its sister, and We seized them with punishment so that they may return.

2:155 And surely We will test you with something of fear, and hunger, and loss of wealth, and lives and fruits, but give good news to the patient ones.

21:35 Every soul will taste death. And We test you with bad and good as a trial; and to Us you will be returned.

3:154 Then He sent down on you, after the distress, security - slumber overcoming a group of you, while another group certainly worried about themselves, thinking about Allah other than the truth - the thought of ignorance, saying, "Is there anything for us from the matter?" Say, "Indeed all the matter of it is for Allah." They hide in themselves what they do not reveal to you. They say, "If there was anything for us from the matter we would not have been killed here." Say, "If you were in your houses, those on whom death was decreed would have surely come out to their places of death. And that Allah might test what is in your breasts and that He may purge what is in your hearts. And Allah is All-Aware of what is in the breasts.

9:49 And among them is he who says, "Permit me and do not put me to trial." Surely, into trial they have fallen. And indeed, Hell will surely surround the disbelievers.

9:51 Say, "Never will befall us except what Allah has decreed for us, He is our Protector." And on Allah let the believers put (their) trust.

3:160 If Allah helps you, then none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, then who is the one who can help you after Him? And on Allah let the believers put (their) trust.

3:159 So because of Mercy from Allah you dealt gently with them. And if you had been rude (and) harsh at heart, surely they would have dispersed from around you. Then pardon them and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter. Then when you have decided, then put trust in Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who put trust.

14:12 And what is for us that we (should) not put our trust in Allah, while certainly He has guided us to our ways? And we will surely bear with patience whatever harm you may cause us. And upon Allah so let the ones who trust put (their) trust."

33:3 And put your trust in Allah. And Allah is sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.

29:10 And of the people are those who say, "We believe in Allah." But when he is harmed in Allah , he considers the trial of the people as the punishment of Allah. But if victory comes from your Lord, they surely say, "Indeed, we were with you." Is not Allah most knowing of what is in the breasts of the worlds?

12:87 O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of the Mercy of Allah . Indeed, no one despairs of the Mercy of Allah except the disbelieving people."

11:93 And O my people, work (according) to your position, indeed, I am working. Soon you will know on whom will come a punishment (that will) disgrace him, and who is a liar. And watch, indeed, I am with you a watcher."

4:122 And those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will admit them in Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. A Promise of Allah in truth, and who is truer than Allah in statement?

68:5 So you will see, and they will see, 68:6 Which of you is the afflicted one. 68:7 Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of (he) who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of the guided ones.

39:49 So when adversity touches man, he calls upon Us; then when We bestow (on) him a favor from Us, he says, "I have been given it only for knowledge." Nay, it (is) a trial, but most of them (do) not know.

24:63 (Do) not make (the) calling (of) the Messenger among you(rselves) as (the) call (of) some of you (to) others. Verily, Allah knows those who slip away among you under shelter. So let those beware who oppose his orders lest befalls them a trial or befalls them a painful punishment.

76:3 Indeed, We guided him to the way whether (he) be grateful or ungrateful.

2:102 And they followed what the devils recited over the kingdom of Solomon. And it was not Solomon who disbelieved, [and] but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and that which was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. And they do not teach anyone unless they say, "We are only trial, so do not disbelieve." But they learn from them that by which they cause separation between a man and his wife. And they do not harm anyone with it except by permission of Allah. And they learn what harms them and does not benefit them. And they certainly knew that whoever buys it, would not have in the Hereafter any share. And evil is surely that for which they sold themselves, if they were to know.

7:163 And ask them about the town which was situated by the sea, when they transgressed in the (matter of) Sabbath, when their fish came to them visibly on the day of their Sabbath and the day they had no Sabbath (they did) not come to them. Thus We test them because they were defiantly disobeying.

7:168 And We divided them in the earth (as) nations. Among them (are) the righteous and among them (are) other than that. And We tested them with the good and the bad, so that they may return.

7:94 And We (did) not send in a city any Prophet except (that) We seized its people with adversity and hardship, so that they may (become) humble.

44:17 And certainly, We tried before them (the) people (of) Pharaoh, and (there) came to them a noble Messenger.

4:78 Wherever you (may) be, death will overtake you even if you are in lofty towers. And if any good befalls them, they say, "This is from Allah," And if any evil befalls them, they say, "This is from you." Say, "All is from Allah." So what (is wrong) (with) these people, they do not seem to understand any statement. 4:79 What(ever) good befalls you is from Allah, and whatever evil befalls you is from yourself. And We have sent you for the people as a Messenger, and Allah is sufficient as a Witness.

(Everything happens by Allah’s permission (58:10, 64:11, 97:4), that’s why “all is from Allah” (4:78). On the other hand, evil befalls people because of themselves (4:79)(e.g. they follow the footsteps of Satan (2:168))(Allah knows best)

8:25 And fear a trial which will not exclusively/(only) afflict those who do wrong among you. And know that Allah is severe in penalty. … 65:2 Then when they have reached their term, then retain them with kindness or part with them with kindness. And take as witnesses two just men among you and establish the testimony for Allah. That is instructed to whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day. And whoever fears Allah, He will make for him a way out,

51:13 A Day (when) they will be tried (yuf’tanuna) over the Fire, 51:14 "Taste your trial (fit’natakum). This (is) what you were seeking to hasten [for it]."

(In this Verse, the punishment is called “trial”. The root of “trial” in Arabic is “Fa-Ta-Nun”, and it means “punishment, burning, burning with fire, to try or prove, put into affliction, distress and hardship, slaughter, cause to err, etc.”)(Verses 51:13-14 are in the context of punishment, rather than testing)(Allah knows best)
