Is Isa in the Qur’an the same as Jesus in the Bible? What was Jesus’ real name?

Is Isa in the Qur’an the same as Jesus in the Bible? What was Jesus’ real name?

4:171 O People of the Book, do not commit excess in your religion and do not say about Allah except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus (‘isa), the son of Mary, was but a messenger of Allah and His word which He directed to Mary and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His messengers. And do not say, "Three"; desist - it is better for you. Indeed, Allah is but one God. Glory be to Him, that He (should) have a son for Him. To Him whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs.

(According to the context of the Verses of the Qur’an, it is obvious that “Isa, the Messiahis “Jesus, the Messiah”, on the other hand, the Qur’an tells the true story of Jesus, so the Qur’an does not confirm that which did not really happen (e.g. the Qur’an confirms that Jesus was not crucified). The Qur’an specifies that Isa is the Messiah, and the son of Mary (4:171), and that he cured the blind and the leper (3:49), and that he was conceived / created in the womb of a virgin woman (3:47), and that God gave him the Gospel (5:46), etc., so “Isa, the Messiah” in the Qur’an is “Jesus, the Messiah” in the Gospel)(Allah knows best)

3:49 And a Messenger to the Children of Israel, "Indeed, I have come to you with a sign from your Lord - that I design for you from clay like the form of the bird, then I breath into it and it becomes a bird by the permission of Allah. And I cure the blind, and the leper, and I give life to the dead by the permission of Allah. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed, in that is surely a sign for you, if you are believers.

(There is no doubt that “Isa” in the Qur’an refers to “Jesus the Messiah”, but it is not clear at all that “Jesus” in the Bible is always “Jesus the Messiah”, because, in the Bible, there are two persons bearing the same name - Jesus. Ancient manuscripts of Matthew 27:16-17 have the name “Jesus Barabbas”, not just “Barabbas” (See the translations that are more faithful to those ancient manuscripts: “New International Version” or “Contemporary English Version”, or “Good News Translation”, or “Net Bible”). According to the Bible, Pilate, the governor of Judea, asked the crowd which prisoner was to be released “Jesus son of the father (aka “Jesus Barabbas”), or Jesus who is called the Messiah?” (Matthew 27:17). So, the conclusion is that the New Testament explicitly says that there were two characters bearing the same name (Jesus). It seems that the Christians mixed stories of the two characters; Jesus Barabbas blasphemed by bearing such a name, “the son of father (referring to God)”, because God does not beget; on the other hand, Jesus the Messiah never said that he was the son of God, because the words “Barabbas / son of the father” and “Messiah / son of Mary” are used in Matthew 27:17 to distinguish one Jesus from the other)(Allah knows best)

4:172 Never would the Messiah disdain to be a slave of Allah nor the Angels near. And whoever disdains His worship and is arrogant, then He will gather them towards Him all together.

(Another point is that someone who claims to be the “king of the Jews”, he is going to have to lead the rebellion against Rome. Jesus Barabbas is the one who rebelled against Rome. The punishment for rebellion is crucifixion; so Jesus Barabbas was crucified, not Jesus the Messiah. A proof that Jesus Barabbas was the “king of the Jews”, while “Jesus the Messiah” had not such a title, is that Matthew 2:1-2 say that Jesus, “the king of the Jews”, was born in Bethlehem in Judea, while the earliest Gospel says that Jesus came from Nazareth, so the two accounts are contradictory, but, in fact, they are two different persons bearing the same name (Jesus); so, one Jesus was born in Bethlehem, and another Jesus was born in Nazareth. The Qur’an confirms that Jesus the Messiah is from Nazareth, because the word “Christian” is literally translated as “Nazarene” (e.g. follower/s of the Nazarene). Matthew 2:2 says, “and asked, where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?”. So, Matthew 2:1-2 explicitly say that the one who was born in Bethlehem is the king of the Jews, rather than the one who was born in Nazareth)(According to Matthew 27:11, the governor asked the one who was to be crucified: “are you the king of the Jews? You have said so, Jesus replied”. So, according to the context (Matthew 27:11-13), despite Jews wanted to crucify the Messiah, they took “the King of the Jews” instead, (the one from Bethlehem); Matthew 27:37 confirms that: “above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is Jesus, the king of the Jews”. On the other hand, “Acts 3:6, 4:10, 10:38” confirm that “Jesus of Nazareth” is the Messiah (aka anointed one), rather than the one from Bethlehem)(The “Jesus” who uses the term “my father” and so, in Matthew, is Jesus Barabbas (aka “Jesus son of the father), rather than Jesus the Messiah)(Allah knows best)

14:4 And We did not sent any Messenger except in the language of his people so that he might make clear for them. Then Allah lets go astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.

(The mother tongue of Jesus was Aramaic. “Jesus” in Syriac Aramaic (aka Syriac) is “Iso”, which is almost the same or very similar or corresponds to “Isa” in Arabic. Classical Arabic has only three vowels “a, i, u” (in long and short versions), so, at the time of Muhammad, people would have used “Isa”, instead of “Iso” or “Isho” in Syriac/Aramaic. The mother tongue of Muhammad is Arabic, so “Isa” is a proper or correct name in Arabic, because, according to Verse 14:4, “We did not sent any Messenger except in the language of his people”)(Regardless of this matter of having a very slight difference in spelling and/or pronunciation, it seems obvious that “Isa” and “Iso” are the same name)(Were the Arabs familiarized with the name “Isa” at the time of Muhammad? According to the article “Syriac language” in wikipedia, Syriac “became a major literary language throughout the Middle East from the 4th to the 8th centuries”, so the Arabs could have been familiarized with the word “Isa” at the time of Muhammad. This is also confirmed by an inscription in a monastery in southern Syria, which as early as 571 AD, bore the name “Isaniya” (“of the followers of Jesus”). This means that the name “Isa” was already in vogue among Syriac Christians in Arabia prior to the advent of Prophet Muhammad)(In regad to “Isa / Iso” spelled as “Isho”, according to the article “Shin (letter)” in Wikipedia, also spelled “Sin”, “its sound value is a voiceless sibilant, voiceless postalveolar fricative or voiceless alveolar sibilants (s)”; in other words, its sound in English can be “sh”, as in “ship”, or “s”, as in “sea and pass”, depending on the Semitic language; in the case of Arabic and Aramaic, according to the table “origins” in that article, “sh” (letter shin / sin) in Hebrew and Aramaic corresponds to “s” (letter sin) in Arabic. The conclusion, by observing that table, is that “Isho / Iso” in Aramaic corresponds to “s” in Arabic (i.e. “Isa”). So, “Isa” is the proper name and spelling)(Allah knows best)

20:113 And thus We have sent it down, the Qur’an in Arabic and have explained the warnings in it that they may fear or that it may cause them remembrance.

(In regard to which word was used at the time of Jesus, some people say that Jesus called himself “Eesho / Isho” in Aramaic, but some sources say that the Northern Palestinian Jews pronounced the letter “shin” as “seen”, then it can also be spelled as “Iso”)(It is wrongly said that Jesus was called “Yeshua” (Hebrew), because Jesus’ mother tongue was Aramaic, not Hebrew. According to the article “Yeshua” in wikipedia, “in English, the name “Yeshua” is extensively used by followers of Messianic Judaism, whereas East Syrian Christian denominations use the name “Isho” in order to preserve the Aramaic or Syriac name of Jesus”. So, Jesus’ name was not “Yeshua” at all)(According to the article, “Syriac as common language in Jesus’ time”, by the “Massachusetts Bible Society”, “Syriac is another name for Aramaic, which most scholars regard as the common language of Palestinian Jews of Jesus’s day”)(Allah knows best)

5:48 And We have revealed to you the Book in truth, confirming the Book that came before it and as a guardian over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their vain desires when the truth has come to you. For each of you We have made a law and a clear way. And if Allah had willed, He would have made you one community [and] but to test you in what He has given you; so race to good. To Allah you will all return, then He will inform you concerning that over which you used to differ.

(Another possibility or interpretation is that the Qur’an corrected the word used by Christians (“Iso”, “Isho” or whatever), in order to recover his exact real name and pronunciation. So that the word “Isa” was not arabized in order to be in Arabic language, but might have been the real name. This interpretation could be supported by Verse 5:48, which says, “a guardian over it” (the Qur’an over the Bible) implies that the Qur’an preserves that which is true in the Bible, but it does not confirm that which God did not reveal)(Nevertheless, it seems obvious that “Iso” and “Isa” are the same word, despite of the very slight differences in spelling and/or pronunciation, and it is Jesus’ real name, rather than “Jesus” in English or “yeshua” in Hebrew, which are not Jesus’ original name at all)(Allah knows best)

74:31 And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except Angels. And We have not made their number except (as) a trial for those who disbelieve – that those who were given the Scripture may be certain, and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who were given the Scripture and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers may say "What does Allah intend by this example?" Thus Allah lets go astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And none knows the hosts of your Lord except Him. And it is not but a reminder to (the) human beings.

(Some non-Muslims dispute about names, while it is evident that “Isa” is Jesus, the Messiah)(Allah knows best)

7:180 And to Allah the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave those who deviate concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.

(Some non-Muslims also wrongly dispute about “Allah”, while “Allah” is “the God” in English)(See below the article “Is Allah the God of the Bible?”)(Allah knows best)
