Was the moon split in two?

Was the moon split in two?

54:1 The Hour has come near (iq’tarabati) and the moon has split (wa-inshaqqa). 54:2 And if they see a Sign, they turn away and say, "A continuing magic." 54:3 And they denied and followed their desires, but (for) every matter (will be a) settlement. … 54:46 Nay, the Hour is their promised time, and the Hour will be more grievous and more bitter.

(One interpretation is that it is a prediction of a future event, so it did not happen yet. This is supported by the next Verse (54:2), which says “if”, so a sign was not seen yet. And it is also supported by Verses (21:96-98, 21:1 and 7:185-187)(See comments below))(Another interpretation is that, the root of “inshaqqa” (“has split”) is “Shiin-Qaf-Qaf” and it means “pass along the way, cross, open a way / passage / vent / channel, cut / split / divided / cleave / ripped / tore”. So the meaning of the word does not only imply the moon splitting in two, but it could also refer to fault lines. Some fault lines were discovered on the moon’s equator in photos from Apollo missions. So, according to the meaning of “Shiin-Qaf-Qaf”, the moon did get cracked, instead of splitting into two pieces)(Allah knows best)

80:26 Then We cleaved (shaqaqna) the earth, splitting (shaqqan), 80:27 Then We caused the grain to grow therein,

(Verse 80:26 uses the same root word “Shiin-Qaf-Qaf” (“cleaved, splitting”) than Verse 54:1, and the context of Verses 80:26-27 support the interpretation that it could refer to cracks on the ground / earth, so the grain is caused to grow therein (80:27); instead of the interpretation that the entire moon was split in two)(Allah knows best)

21:96 Until when has been opened (for) Gog and Magog, and they descend from every elevation. 21:97 And the true promise has approached (wa-iq’taraba), then (fa) behold, the eyes of those who disbelieve are staring, "O woe to us, verily, we had been in heedlessness of this; nay, we were wrongdoers." 21:98 Indeed, you and what you worship besides Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will come to it.

(In regard to the interpretation that it is a future event, Verse 54:1 says, “the Hour has come near”. Similarly, Verse 21:97 says, “the true promise has approached”, and according to the context it also refers to a future event (Day of Resurrection); and both Verses use the same root word (Qaf-Ra-Ba), which is translated as “come near” (54:1) and “approached” (21:97))(Allah knows best)

21:1 Their account (has) approached (iq’taraba) for mankind, while they are turning away in heedlessness.

(The mention of “account” in Verse 21:1 also refers to a future event. This interpretation is supported by Verse 40:27 “the Day of Account”)(Verses 54:1 and 21:1 also use the same root word (Qaf-Ra-Ba))(Allah knows best)

40:27 And Moses said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord from every arrogant one who does not believes in the Day of Account."

7:185 Do they not look in the dominion of the heavens and the earth and (every)thing that Allah has created and that perhaps their term has verily come near (iq’taraba)? So in what statement after this will they believe? ... 7:187 They ask you about the Hour, when will be its appointed time? Say, "Its knowledge is only with my Lord. None can reveal its time except Him. It lays heavily upon the heavens and the earth. It will not come to you but suddenly." They ask you as if you were well informed about it. Say, "Its knowledge is only with Allah, but most of the people do not know."

(Verse 54:1 says that “the Hour has come near and the moon has split”, and Verse 7:185 uses the same root word “Qaf-Ra-Ba” (“has come near”), and it also does not imply that it happened yet. This is supported by the context - Verse 7:187 says, “when will be its appointed time? Say, “Its knowledge is only with my Lord”)(Allah knows best)

70:6 Indeed, they see it (as) far off. 70:7 But We see it near. 70:8 The Day when the sky will be like molten copper,

20:133 And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former Scriptures?

(Verses 20:133, 30:58, 7:203 and 6:109 might confirm that they did not see a sign at the time of Prophet Muhammad (other than the Scripture))(Allah knows best)

21:5 Nay, they say, "Muddled dreams; nay, he (has) invented it; nay, he is a poet. So let him bring us a sign like what was sent to the former." 21:6 Not a town which We destroyed believed before them, so will they believe?

30:58 And verily, We (have) set forth for mankind in this Qur’an every example. But if you bring to them a sign, surely those who disbelieve will say, "You are not except falsifiers."

(Verse 30:58 says “if”, so a Sign was not seen yet)(Allah knows best)

7:203 And when you do not bring them a Sign, they say, "Why have you not devised it?" Say, "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This is enlightenment from your Lord and guidance and mercy for a people who believe."

6:109 And they swear by Allah their strongest oaths that if a sign came to them, they would surely believe in it. Say, "The signs are only with Allah." And what will make you perceive that when it comes, they will not believe.

10:15 And when Our Verses are recited to them as clear proofs, those who do not hope for the meeting with Us said, "Bring us a Qur’an other than this or change it." Say, "It is not for me to change it on my own accord. I follow not except what is revealed to me. Indeed, If I were to disobey my Lord, I fear the punishment of a Great Day."

(The Verses of the Qur’an are clear proofs. And it confirms the evidence of that which was in the former Scriptures (20:133))(Allah knows best)

21:10 Indeed, We (have) sent down to you a Book in which is your mention. Then will you not use reason?

3:29 Say, "Whether you conceal what (is) in your breasts or you disclose it - Allah knows it. And He knows what (is) in the heavens and what (is) in the earth. And Allah (is) on everything All-Powerful."

(The One Who created the heavens (space) and the earth (matter) is Able to split the moon)(Allah knows best)

50:44 (The) Day (when) the earth will split (tashaqqaqu) from them, hurrying. That (is) a gathering easy for Us.

(This Verse uses the same word than Verse 54:1, and it refers to a future event too. So, both, the earth and the moon, will split)(Allah knows best)

25:4 And those who disbelieve say, "This (is) not but a lie, (which) he invented [it], and other people helped him at it." But verily, they (have) produced an injustice and a lie.

(Another matter concerning Verse 54:1 is that some non-Muslims say that Muhammad plagiarized it from Imru’u Al-Qays’s poetry, while the Persian source for the alleged poem (moon split poem) is highly doubtful, and the poem itself doesn’t exist anywhere in Imru’u Al-Qays’ poetry-collections. There is clear evidence of fabrication against Islam, but even if a Verse of the Qur’an were similar or the same than a verse of an older book, it would not prove the Qur’an to be wrong in itself, but the Qur’an would mention that which is true, for example, that which is true in the Bible, while the Qur’an does not confirm matters which are wrong. Another point is that mentioning just one similar verse (if that were the case) does not imply plagiarizing, because one verse is 0,016% of the Verses of the Qur’an, so it is just an irrelevant matter. There are mathematical and scientific matters which prove that the Qur’an is from God. See the links below)(In addition, there is a false story saying that the daughter of Imru’u Al-Qays, after hearing Muhammad’s daughter reciting Verse 54:1, she dared to say her, and to the Muslim community with her, that it was one of her father’s poems, and that the Prophet had stolen it, and that the Prophet pretended that he received it from God. While, there is no such poem in Imru’u Al-Qays’ poetry collections, so, if that were the case, she could have not brought any evidence about it. The story sounds so false, but, as I said, even if a Verse of the Qur’an were to tell the same or similar to other sources, that’s because it is true. There is nothing wrong in confirming that which is true, because the Qur’an is the truth (2:91) confirming the truth. For example, if an ancient poet said “God is One”, then, the Qur’an confirming it would imply plagiarism? Some non-Muslims make ridiculous and/or irrelevant allegations, and they are exposing themselves and their wishful thinking, rather than exposing Islam/The Qur’an)(Allah knows best)
