Does Islam encourage slavery? Is slavery allowed in Islam?

Does Islam encourage slavery? Is slavery allowed in Islam?

2:177 It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the east and the west but righteous is he who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets and gives wealth in spite of love for it to the near relatives, the orphans, the needy, the wayfarer, and those who ask, and in freeing the necks (slaves); and who establish prayer and give zakah and those who fulfill their covenant when they make it; and those who are patient in suffering, hardship, and periods of stress. Those are the ones who are true and it is those who are the righteous.

9:60 The charities are only for the poor, and the needy, and those who collect them, and those whose hearts are inclined, and in the (freeing of) the necks, and for those in debt and in the way of Allah, and the wayfarer - an obligation from Allah. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

90:10 And shown him the two ways? 90:11 But he has not attempted the steep path. 90:12 And what can make you know what the steep path is? 90:13 (It is) freeing a neck, 90:14 Or feeding in a day of severe hunger. 90:15 An orphan of near relationship, 90:16 Or a needy person in misery,

4:75 And what is with you that you do not fight in the way of Allah, and (for) those who are weak among men and women and children who say, "Our Lord, take us out of this town whose people are oppressors and appoint for us from Yourself a protector and appoint for us from Yourself a helper.

16:90 Indeed, Allah commands justice and good, and giving to relatives, and forbids immorality and bad and oppression. He admonishes you so that you may take heed.

4:24 And those women who are married except whom you rightfully possess. The decree of Allah upon you. And lawful to you are beyond these, that you seek them with your wealth desiring chastity, not lust. So for whatever you benefit from them, give them their bridal due as an obligation. And there is no sin on you concerning what you mutually agree to, beyond the obligation. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

(In regard to the mention of “what / those whom you rightfully possess” in the Qur’an, they are not slaves or sex slaves. It is interpreted that those “women” who are “prohibited” in Verse 4:24 are believers, married to believers, while “whom you rightfully possess” might be married to disbelievers, so they might have been taken from disbelieving people, or they emigrated from disbelieving people to believing people (4:100, 8:72), so Muslims are in charge of them. It is a matter of protection of women, not slavery. Sex slaves are not allowed in the Qur’an. Notice that Verse 4:24 does not exclude what you rightfully possess from marriage in order to have relations (this is confirmed by Verse 24:32). So, what your right hands possess”, who are already married, are not prohibited to Muslims for marriage, because if she is a believer, and is married to a disbeliever, then her marriage with a disbelieving man is nullified in Islam (60:10))(Allah knows best)

60:10 O you who believe, when the believing women come to you as emigrants, then examine them. Allah is most knowing of their faith. And if you know them to be believers, then do not return them to the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. But give them what they have spent. And there is no blame upon you if you marry them when you have given them their (bridal) dues. And do not hold to marriage bonds with disbelieving women, but ask for what you have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. That is the Judgment of Allah. He judges between you. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

(The Verse may implicitly suggest that you can return the disbelieving women to the disbelievers. So, it could also be interpreted that there is no any reason to retain them with you (e.g. there is no any sexual purpose towards them), so you can release them, because there is no sexual slavery in Islam. So, you can marry the married one if her current husband is a disbeliever, but you cannot marry her if she is a disbeliever or she is already married to a believer. You can marry believing women, if they want)(Allah knows best)

4:3 And if you fear that not you will be able to do justice with the orphans, then marry what seems suitable to you from the women - two, or three, or four. But if you fear that you will not be just, then one or what your right hands possess. That is more appropriate that you may not oppress.

26:22 And this (is the) favor with which you reproach me, that you have enslaved (the) Children of Israel." 26:23 Pharaoh said, "And what (is the) Lord (of) the worlds?"

(In regard to Judaism and Christianity, slavery is allowed: according to the Bible, in Leviticus 25:44-46, “Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.”; according to Ephesians 6:5, “Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.”; and according to 1 Peter 2:18, “Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are cruel / unjust”)(In regard to sex slaves, in Judaism and Christianity, according to Genesis 38:8, women must have relations with her husband’s brother, while in Islam women have no obligation or cannot be forced to have relations)(Women can divorce in Islam, but they cannot divorce in Christianity (Matthew 5:32). So, she could be oppressed or abused (e.g. raped, made into a slave) by her husband)(In Judaism and Christianity, in Deuteronomy 22:28-29, if a man rapes a girl, he must marry her forever and can never divorce. So, this could rather punish the victim, and the rapist would go unpunished. According to Numbers 31:17-18, “Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man”. This verse is in a context of slavery “save for yourselves”, and in a context of sex, because they take the “virgin ones” for themselves)(Allah knows best)

29:8 And We have enjoined upon man goodness to his parents, but if they both strive against you to make you associate with Me that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey both of them. To Me is your return, and I will inform you about what you used to do.

(In Judaism and Christianity, even the children could be oppressed and killed by the parents; according to Deuteronomy 21:18-20, “If someone has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a glutton and a drunkard.”. Then all the men of his town are to stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.”)(Allah knows best)

12:32 She said, "That (is) the one about whom you blamed me. And I certainly sought to seduce him, but he saved himself, and if he does not do what I order him, surely, he will be imprisoned and certainly will be of those who are disgraced.”

(In Islam, Joseph was a slave (12:30) and he disobeyed. He was averted from evil and immorality (12:24); and you can disobey your parents too (29:8), lest you commit a sin. While in Judaism and Christianity, you have to obey such people anyhow)(Allah knows best)

4:92 And it is not for a believer that he kills a believer except by mistake. And whoever killed a believer by mistake, then freeing of a believing slave (raqabatin) and blood money (is to be) paid to his family unless that they remit (it as) charity. But if (he) was from a people hostile to you and he was a believer, then freeing of a believing slave (raqabatin). And if (he) was from a people (with whom) is a treaty between you and between them, then the blood money is to be paid to his family, and freeing of a believing slave (raqabatin). And whoever does not find, then fasting for two months consecutively, (seeking) repentance from Allah, and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

(The root of “raqabatin” (slave) is “Ra-Qaf-Ba”, and it means, “to guard, observe, watch, respect, regard, tie by the neck; riqab – neck, slave, captive of war; murtaqib – one who guards, etc.”)(So, “slave” is in the sense of guarding, so you are in charge of someone, rather than oppressing people, which is forbidden in Islam. It could also be a captive of war, so believing slaves are given priority to be set free, rather than an enemy to Muslims)(Allah knows best)
